Yoni Shakti Book Resources

Thank you for visiting the YONI SHAKTI resources page. I have here made available a range of written, visual and audio material to support understanding and practical encounter with the yogic and tantric practices shared in my book Yoni Shakti. In particular I am keen to empower readers who resonate with the messages at the heart of the book to spread those messages through, for example, sharing the Introduction and the Womb Yoga Manifesto with those friends, studio-owners and yoga teachers in their lives who may need to receive these messages. The practice guides are extracts from the book describing some key techniques of Womb Yoga. The complete set of ten Yoga Nidra practices to support the stages of our lives as women are also available to download from this page.

I hope that this material is of value to you on your yoga journey. In order for the materials to be widely accessible, I have, (with the exception of the book herself), chosen not to charge for any item. Instead, I have simply offered them for free download. If you value the materials, then I invite for your to contribute whatever feels appropriate through the contribute page. These contributions reflect the value you place on the material, so please pay whatever you feel you want to. Introduction to YONI SHAKTI

This nine page pdf is an excerpt from the beginning of Yoni Shakti. It’s the introductory material that sets out the scope of the book, and presents some very radical and exciting ideas about women and power and yoga and language. It’s my belief that this is one of the most vivid and exciting parts of the book, so I am glad to share this with you here. I do hope you enjoy reading this download, and I’d be glad to hear from you once you’ve read it – there are many topics for discussion presented here. Lets get some debate going amongst the thinking yoginis…

Yoni Shakti: A woman's guide to power & freedom through yoga & tantra

Learning to be Fearless

In this, the final chapter of Yoni Shakti, there are many reflections on recently uncovered abuses within the yoga world. The chapter concludes by considering practical strategies to prevent the continuance of such abuses.

Chapter Twenty-Nine: A WOMB-FRIENDLY YOGA MANIFESTO

A Womb-Friendly Yoga Manifesto

This striking eleven page pdf sets out the basic principles and guidelines for practising womb friendly yoga.  It is a manifesto advocating respect for women in yoga practice.  It includes: a clear exposition of why honouring womb cycles is the foundation of a refined and sensitive yoga practice for women; a set of straightforward guidelines for safe practice of yoga during the many special times of a woman’s life, including during menstruation, pregnancy, when using an IUD, postnatally, during peri-menopause, and when hoping to conceive. Guidance on issues including inversions, bandhas and pumping breaths. This is a useful reference for any yoga teacher whose classes include women, or any yoga studio manager who runs yoga classes attended by female students.

Tara's Yoga Nidra of Elemental Integration (yoni)

This spacious thirteen minute yoga nidra practice is the opening invocation to Yoni Shakti. In this version, the word YONI is used to locate energy in the cunt.

It may be an interesting experiment in the power of language for you to listen to both versions of this yoga nidra, this one and its sister track which uses the word CUNT to locate energy in the yoni. Enjoy! And compare your responses. Maybe your reactions to the differences between yoni and cunt change with repeated listening? I’d be glad to hear your comments, so if you’d like to share your response please email me.

Yoga Nidra 1: Starry night pure yoga nidra (a fundamental practice of awareness - Kali)

This twenty-six minute yoga nidra practice is an invitation to settle into spacious awareness. It is an open, feminine and welcoming practice. The rotation of consciousness uses the image of a constellation of stars. The practice in this form was first shared at the Return to Centre Women’s Retreat at Cae Mabon, in Snowdonia in 2013: http://returntocentre.org.uk/#/cae-mabon/4550555760. This version was specially recorded for Yoni Shakti readers in my own studio in Stroud, and has been sound engineered to render it clear and very easy to hear. The original practice arrived during intensive yoga nidra practice in preparation for the Total Yoga Nidra Teacher Training programme. For more details see www.yoganidranetwork.org. I hope you enjoy the practice. The practice is described in prose on pages 435-441 oof Yoni Shakti and it connects to the energies of Kali as a guardian protectress of time and change.

Yoga Nidra 2: New Beginnings (menarche, innocence, trust and power - Sodasi)

This thirty-eight minute yoga nidra practice honours the vulnerable power of innocence and the tender bright hope that accompanies new beginnings of any kind.  It connects with the menarcheal energies of Sodasi, the sixteen year old goddess, and is intended to provide supportive inspiration for any time of new beginning.  It is a recording of the practice described on page 442 of Yoni Shakti.

Yoga Nidra 3: Cyclical Wisdom (Menstruation, cycles and seasonal turnings - Tara)

This twenty-six minute yoga nidra invites you to connect with the deep feminine knowing of cyclical wisdom in the form of the seasonal life of the womb’s cycles. It is inspired by my personal connection with the ‘Seasons of the Menstrual Cycle’ teachings of Alexandra Pope. This nidra first arrived as I began to practice menstrual cycle awareness as a conscious spiritual discipline. I have shared this nidra with many groups of yoginis on my womb yoga trainings and retreats all over Europe and it sits very naturally with those women who are open to the experience of menstrual consciousness as a spiritual practice. For women who are not experiencing menstrual cycles at the present time, or who have passed over the menopause, then these seasonal images resonate more widely in terms of the turning of seasons in our life cycles. I hope you enjoy listening to this version of the practice which was specially recorded for you in my own yoga studio in Stroud. The practice is described on page 443-4 of Yoni Shakti) and it connects to the protective and guiding energies of Tara.

Yoga Nidra 4: In the Wild Garden (joyous freedom to flow - sexuality, creativity and juice - Kamalatmika and Matangi)

This forty minute yoga nidra celebrates the twin joys of creativity and sexuality. The practice invites you to enter your own wild garden and to delight in the sensual and creative nature of your own source place. This yoga nidra connects with the energies of Matangi and Kamalatmika, the Mahavidyas who stand guardian in Yoni Shakti over the potent forces of our creativity and sexuality respectively. It is a recording of the practice described on page 445-6 of Yoni Shakti. I hope you enjoy your encounter with the wildness of your own garden!

Yoga Nidra 5: Nourishing Growth (nurturing the capacity to support new life - Bhuvaneshwari)

This forty-three minute yoga nidra practice creates a spacious welcome for new life. It was intended initially and specifically to support women through the experience of pregnancy, using the mother’s breath to nourish the child, and carrying awareness around the body of the child within the womb. It may also be a helpful practice to use when seeking to conceive, if you are happy to invite the unborn (and as yet perhaps unconceived child) to inhabit your womb. Some women also enjoy to use this practice to support a re-integration of their own inner child, and imagine that it is their own self residing in the comfort of the womb. This is a recording of the practice described on 446-8 of Yoni Shakti. I hope it nourishes you.

Yoga Nidra 6: Thanksgiving and Grieving (postnatal recovery, transformation and adaptation - Chinnamasta)

This forty-one minute yoga nidra practice holds psychic and emotional space to honour the need for thanksgiving, grieving and healing at every dimension of being. It was initially created with the intention to provide a healing space for women in postnatal recovery (after live births, or after miscarriages or terminations), but in fact it has proved valuable for women at any key moment of transformation, where there is a need to acknowledge with kindness and compassion the deep changes we may have experienced. It is a recording of the practice described in Yoni Shakti pp 448-9. I hope it guides you to your own capacity to integrate transformations in your life.

Yoga Nidra 7: Being with not Knowing (perimenopause and the inevitability of change - Bagalamukhi)

This forty minute yoga nidra practice is intended to provide support as we encounter the inevitability of change. It helps us to be with uncertainty and to encounter loss. In particular it invites insight into the nature of perimenopausal experiences. The central image is of being at the centre of the womb-rose room, as each petal detaches and blows away. This image and the quality of feeling that surrounds it arrived in my heart during a practice of yoga nidra as I was writing the Bagalmukhi / perimenopause chapter of Yoni Shakti in the writer in residency cottage provided by the HoskingHouses Trust (thank you to Sarah Hosking!). This is a recording of that practice as described on pp 450-1 of Yoni Shakti. I hope that it brings comfort and understanding during any period of loss and change.

Yoga Nidra 8: Self-anointing ritual (embracing power, menopause and the confidence to speak one's own truth - Bhairavi)

This forty minute yoga nidra was created to dignify and honour the experiences of menopause as a powerful spiritual initiation. The central experience of the self-anointing is rooted in a ritual meditation that was part of the spirituality module of Alexandra Pope’s Women’s Leadership Apprenticeship 2012. The experience remained vividly with me and returned as the perfect nidra practice when I was writing the menopause chapter of Yoni Shakti. This is a recording of the practice described on page 451-2 of Yoni Shakti, and it has been valued not only by the menopausal and perimenopausal women with whom I have shared it but also by younger women seeking to affirm self-confidence and trust in their own power.

Yoga Nidra 9: Out of the Smoke (touching the power close to the bone - Dhumavati)

This thirty-nine minute yoga nidra invites you to connect with the deep power close to the bone, the power we access when everything else seems to be falling apart. The nidra connects to the grandmother energy of Dhumavati, and to everything we learn through suffering, difficulty and challenge. I hope you find that this practice gives strength and clarity of purpose. This version of the practice was specially recorded for you in my own yoga studio in Stroud. The practice is described on page 453 of Yoni Shakti.

Yoga Nidra 10: In the Yoginis' Temple

This twenty-two minute practice offers an experience of welcome and of deeply restful healing in the temple of the yoginis. The practice arrived to me during my research for the early history chapters of Yoni Shakti, when I developed a powerful dream connection with these temples. The practice was shared in a variety of different forms in Bristol and Brussels during 2011-12 with groups of yoginis who had very positive experiences during this yoga nidra, and so I am very happy indeed to be able to share it with you. I have many wonderful stories to share about it! I hope it nourishes you at every dimension of being. This intimate version was specially recorded in my studio in Stroud, in the presence of the Ten Mahavidya Yantras. The practice is described on pages 454-9 of Yoni Shakti.
